CODA research was awarded with the Banc Sabadell Innovation Prize in the context of the international show of catalan architecture for the project BigO in Hungary. The jury presided by Josep LLuís Mateo appreciated "a valuable design exercise of a remarkable beauty and technology efficiency ". BigO project is embedded in the elastic timber gridshell research field conducted by the team and landmarked a hit in lightness and stiffness.
The name of BigO makes reference to the mathematical notation used in computer science to describe and classify any algorithm complexity. But in this case, the name was also making reference to the challenge of building a very big toroidal gridshell by means of very simple elements and tools. One of the ultimate goals of the research group is to universalize efficient building technologies by means of computational design.
The prize will support further research in this direction.
